    My mission

for 30 over years i have 1 single mission. to put on weight. walking thru the last 30 years, i have heard of may ways, tried all, failed terribly. these are my myth busters.

myth 1: you will put on weight if you eat more meals and eat supper
    - did it, spend tons of money
    - i can eat 12 pieces of large pizza and 2 plates of spaghetti, numerous glass of coke, coupled with fries and garlic bread
    - i can eat 8 sets of MacDonald's breakfast meal
    FAILED

myth 2: you will put on weight when you enlist into army
    - did it, exercised like mad for the first 3 months
    FAILED

myth 3: you will put on weight if you donate blood
    - did it, more than 10 times
    - besides helping people, getting a few free gifts
    FAILED

myth 4: you will surely gain weight when you are married
    - did it, married for 7 years le
    - wife fed me well, i ate all sorts of stuff
    FAILED

myth 5: you will gain weight if you drink goat’s milk
    - did it, dun believe? see it for yourself

    Responsibilities

i was talking to a friend about responsibility. he told me he was over-loaded by all the responsibilities he has. as a good friend, i started to encourage him, tell him not to be too sian. then suddenly, to my own surprise i told him that responsibility has many faces. dun just look at it one way. no idea where that came from.

sometimes in life we are so engrossed in doing one particular work and feels totally responsible over it cos we think its our calling, our duty, our choice. but in life there are so many other responsibilities. we do not live and breath for only 1 responsibility. we cannot just live for the responsibility of work alone, or for family alone.

moses in the bible was called to lead the people of israel out of egypt. the calling was gigantic. responsibility is super heavy. everyday in the wilderness, he has to serve the people, solving their problems 24hrs non-stop. he must be thinking he is fulfilling the supreme calling in life, nothing else matters. but it took his FIL to wake him up. to remind him that leading the people is not the only responsibility he has. what abt the responsibility of taking care of the family? what abt the responsibility of raising up younger leaders? what abt the responsibility of his own health?

i think in cosmopolitan singapore, we are so easily sucked into the system of chasing after the secondary things in life. i mean work is impt, without it i wun be able to buy milk for my 2 daughters. without money my family cant enjoy the life we have right now. but if we earn the whole world but loses our life, what good is that? i was watching a HK serial just now and saw a 1-room flat in the show. a family of 4 stays in it. so cramped, but happy. isnt that the main priority? food for thought…

    Kairos

kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment (the supreme moment). kairos signifies a moment of undetermined period of time in which something special happens. in the new testament, kairos means “the appointed time in the purpose of God”, the time when God acts.

the frustrating thing is not knowing the kairos time and missed it when it arrives. but i think more frustrating and to certain extent, feeling devastated is when you know the kairos moment is here but not able to to jump aboard and catch the ride. you are left there asking, “is that the purpose of God for me after all? if the appointed time is now, why am i not in?”

    my memories with Pa

today on the radio, the deejay was reminiscing the times she had spent with her father. it got me started on the memories i had with my father. sad to say, there isn’t any photos i have taken with my dad alone. only him with Joey.

the most pleasant memory i had with my dad was when he brought me to a fishing trip at sembawang beach. i remembered vividly, we brought along all the fishing gear, rod and hooks. but no bait. i asked my dad and he only say wait. hahaa… trying to be secretive.

much to our surprise, we were suppose to catch our own bait. free worms from the beach. my father prepared bread and balachan. balachan in bread and everything in a handkerchief. dip into the sea water and place it a few centimetres above the sand. voila!! big and juicy earthworms.

i guess, i got to remake new memories with my father. maybe i shall buy him a new set of fishing equipment and we can go fishing again.

    Life Sentence

yesterday we attended an interesting talk by one of the member in church. his topic is ‘leaving a legacy’. discovering your God-given mission in life. a quote from John Maxwell, “I have never worked a single day in my life”. what he meant was if we are in our life mission, then what we are doing is not mundane and tiring. instead, it is enjoyable and we will look forward to do it everyday. a life mission is something we will continue to do with delight even after we have retired. we have seen many people chasing after a certain type of lifestyle. they think they are fulfilling their life mission. but once they retire, after a few years, many of them become senile or even dead. why? cos they no longer do that so called ‘life mission’ they thought they had.

our legacy is determined by ourselves. not by others. cos it’s a personal choice on how to live out lives. what is a life sentence? when you think of certain people in this world, eg. Lee Kuan Yew, Deng Xiao Ping, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Michael Jordan, Pst Kong, how would you describe them or what they have done? survey has shown that no matter how famous a person is, when he or she is dead, gone for 10 years, 20 years, when others talk about them, normally we will describe about their entire life in just one sentence. not a paragraph, not a chapter, not a book. that is Life Sentence.

Lee Kuan Yew – the father of Singapore
Deng Xiao Ping – the man who opened China
Abraham Lincoln – America civil war
Mother Teresa – a great humatarian
Michael Jordan – the greatest NBA player
Pst Kong – the founder of CHC

what would others say of us when we are gone? what will our children remember us as? start living the way we want others to remember us for. a great man! a loving father! a friend in times of need!

another author mentioned this in his book, that everyone should attend their own funeral once a year. what he mean is that we should have a vision of our own funeral yearly. vision what would others say in our funeral. that will help us to stay focus in our life mission. sounds scary, but has its truth la.

how can we leave a legacy?
idea 1: decide what is important and write it down
    (a) to love God wholeheartedly
    (b) to keep my family in Christ and lead them to love God
    (c) to lead more people to God and help them stay spiritual

    idea 2: make memories
    (a) spend time with my children, love is spelt T-I-M-E
    (b) spend time with God, remember the special experiences

    idea 3: practice spiritual disciplines
    (a) prayer, worship, fellowship, stewardship, evangelism

    A story, A relationship

before i started this new position in my current client’s place, i was interviewed by 2 ladies from the client’s office. the finance dept director and senior manager. obviously they like my answers and so i got the job.

as usual, you don’t talk to your bosses a lot when you are relatively new in the work. so i kept very much to myself and my work. only interacting with my fellow colleagues. but today, i had a chance to step into the finance director’s office to update a case to her. the meeting was short, barely 5mins. but that short meeting strengthened the belief that she is a tough boss, demanding and no-nonsense type. fine with me, as long as i do my work, she doesn’t bother with me, status quo is good.

then at the end of the day, i had another chance to talk to the senior manager. she was trying to explain a scenario in the office, how things are done and why are there so many changes. but the way she talked was more like telling a story. so the atmosphere was light and at times, fun. we were laughing, poking fun at some of the policies set in the office. i felt at the end of the session, the ice was broken. i no longer think she is far and distant. i believe the working relationship will be better as the days goes by.

it’s amazing, how a little story telling can break ice among people and bring the relationship a step closer..

    Draw me near

what are spiritual life killers? after last friday’s encounter in cwbs, i’m starting to re-evaluate my life in particular my relationship with God. there were times of being intimate with God, there were times of being lethargic and feels like giving up. it is always during such times we got to know its time to get back to God and let Him draw us near. one thing that Pst Kong shared last friday which is so important, was the point that when we are dry and backsliding in Christ, we need to have the discernment to know it and seek to come back and allow Him to draw us near. so important!

another revelation i had in the bs was from the song Pst wrote many years ago. the song is just so good, almost every time i sing that worship song, i will be so touched by the wordings and tears will fall. but who would have thought that Pst can write such a good song. i mean, all of us know that he is a great preacher, he is a great teacher, he is a great church-planter, he is a great evangelist, but a song writer? never cross most of our minds. but this is where the revelation is.

when we are walking close with God, when we are drawn near to Him. whatever we do will be great! even though we may not be trained in a certain area, God can use us if we are humble before him. He gives grace to the humble.

ONCE I HAVE TURN MY FACE FROM THEE
YET YOU SOUGHT ME AND YOU CLEANSED ME
    MADE ME WHOLE AGAIN
    JESUS MY SAVIOR
    MY BELOVED AND FRIEND
    YOUR PRAISES I BRING
    FROM MY HEART I SING
DRAW ME, O DRAW ME AWAY
    MESSIAH TODAY
    TO YOUR PRESENCE TO STAY
    O JESUS NOW CHANGE ME
AND MOULD ME THAT I CAN BE
    EVERMORE TRUE TO THEE
YOU ARE THE SHEPHERD OF MY HEART
YOU HAVE BROUGHT ME TO YOUR CHAMBER
    MY MASTER AND KING
    YOU LIGHT UP MY DARKNESS
    AND GAVE ME YOUR WORD
    THAT YOU'LL NEVER FORSAKE ME
NOR NO EVER WILL LEAVE ME
